A Colonnade in Ruins

The ruins in this painting are modelled after Bernini’s renowned colonnade for Saint Peter’s in Rome. Like its pendant, Arches in Ruins (The Met; 17.190.31), the steep perspective is consistent with its use as an overdoor, seen from below.
